I’d like to be, under the sea….

April 10, 2016

This has been a busy morning spent designing a new wheel.  The theme will be primarily sea turtles but other critters will make their appearance as well.  In this photo you can see the placement of the carved and painted sea turtle head up by the handle.  It will be sort of emerging between the two large wheels just as a real turtle’s head emerges from between two shells.  I can hardly wait to start sculpting this guy.  These turtles are so cute!  The main wood will be walnut with other types for accents.

Just a close-up of Mr. Turtle.  The big wheels will each have a painting of a sea turtle gliding along with a school of brightly colored tropical fish.  These images may be sculpted as well and put under poured resin to give a 3D underwater look.

I bought this small bronze octopus years ago with the intent of using it on a wheel some day.  I guess now is the time.  It will likely have its own little tide pool/garden on the shelf.  In the tucked away part of the main frame below the axis and between the toe ends of the treadles I plan on creating a sculpted sea turtle egg nest with at least one turtle hatching out.  Kind of tricky with the limited space but I’ll give it a try.

This wheel will also feature sea horses and paua shell but I will save these ideas for a future post.  Now to go find some old Beatle music to inspire me….
