Just Touching Base

March 6, 2016

The medieval/Gothic wheel is ready to test except for a bit of final varnishing.  It treadles well and all systems are go.  Amy, my daughter with the super hearing, will listen for little noises that I just don’t hear with my old ears.  Small things have been finished since the last post – flyer, bobbins, knobs, and refined artwork.

Linda wanted a bit more carving on the leaves, which was a great suggestion.  I spent a day or two refining the shapes to make them more organic.  Also added more wood shapes to help things appear more like a seamless flowing thing.  The final improvement was to stain the cherry darker in some areas to bring out the depth and integrate it with the walnut. You might notice a small light colored line carved along the walnut treadle overlay.  It was also one of Linda’s suggestions and it adds to the architectural flair.

Now it is time for me to move along and get serious about another project.  There is one wheel that will feature a Celtic/ Irish theme and just may incorporate a music box!  We need to iron out the details before I can begin.  And there are others… I am so thankful to have this work.
